Dehydration is the oldest form of
food preservation and the simplest. From ancient mariners on long voyages to
wandering nomads, dried foods were essential. It is important when considering a dehydrator to purchase a dehydrator that has an adjustable thermostat. Valuable enzymes and essential nutrients are lost if food is dehydrated over 116 degree F. Many dehydrators do not have an adjustable thermostat (One from a local store we tested was non-adjustable and set at 170 degrees!). The dehydrators we sell have built in thermostats so you can control the temperature from 85 degrees on up. We suggest dehydrating at about 100-105 degrees. It may take a little bit longer, but you will preserving vital enzymes and nutrients in the food. We recommend purchasing a computer controlled dehydrator if maintaining the proper temperature is important to you. The non-digital dehydrators are not as accurate based on our testing. Click here to see our Dehydrator Comparison Chart that compares the Dehydrators we offer.
Non-Digital Electric Dehydrators These electric dehydrators work by using a heating coil and a fan to gently evaporate the moisture off the food. They are analog and may not maintain precise temperatures and may take longer to dehydrate.
Computer Controlled Electric Dehydrators The electric dehydrators work by using a heating coil and a fan to gently evaporate the moisture off the food. These models use computer feedback controls to ensure temperature stability and faster dehydration times. They also include digital timers that will automatically turn the dehydrator off at the end of the cycle.
