||The Truth About Cell

It is truly amazing how our technology advances at
an incredible speed. Just 10 years ago, cordless telephones
were something used only by big business and an elite few.
Now it seems that every kid in middle school packs a cell
phone in their backpack. Those Star Trek-like communicators
are ever present and Im starting to get used to people
seemingly talking to themselves everywhere in stores and
on the streets. The benefits of cellular telephones are un-
doubtedly numerous They are especially useful in emergency
situations as illustrated by the ability of loved ones to
call one last time in the disastrous9/11 planes. That tragic
incident has vastly increased the popularity of cell phones
However, technology that improves convenience often has a
destructive side. Cell phones are no exception. Towers and
antennas are sprouting up everywhere, powering some one
billion mobile phones worldwide The radio waves transmit
electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and there seems to be no
where to hide.Wherever cellular phones can work, that area
is being irradiated 24 hours a day. In a very short period of
time, we have corn let altered our electromagnetic environment,
without regard to possible consequences. If Neil
Armstrong had taken a cell telephone to the moon in 1968,
it would have been the single most powerful source of microwave radiation impacting the
earth at that time next to
the sun Today, the amount of microwaves our planet swims
in far surpasses the output of the sun and its making people
and the environment sick
The health consequences of EMR exposure vary in in-
tensity from mild symptoms to serious diseases Some symp-
toms of "adio wave sickness" are insomnia, headaches dizziness, nausea,
memory problems, flu-like illness, fatigue,
pressure or pain in the chest, pressure behind the eyes, swollen throat, dry lips or
mouth, fever, muscle spasms, pain in
the legs or the soles of the feet, joint pain, nosebleeds, digestive
problems skin rash hair loss and ringing in the ears
Some of the more serious possible disease connections are
asthma, hypertension tinnitis sleep disorders depression,
chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis, autism, and thyroid disease.
People with electromagnetic sensitivity experience a social
stigma that denies their health conditions as EMR related.
However, a growing number of doctors and experts
are listening to the estimated 9 million people in the U.S.
alone that are reporting problems. 100 physicians and scientists
at Harvard and Boston University Schools of Public
Health have called digital cellular towers a radiation hazard.
As all things on the planet are connected, what befalls us
also effects nature. A pioneer in the field of bioelectromagnetics, Dr. Robert 0 Becker,
wrote the book, The Body Electric. Dr. Becker claims that electromagnetic pollution is the
greatest threat to our environment, greater even
then global warming.
Towers for mobile phones pagers, and digital television
kill several hundred million birds in the U.S. each year. There
have been incidents of thousands of birds at once flying full
force into the ground near a radio tower. Some fly into the
tower itself the guide wire that supports it or into each other
One speculation for this catastrophe is a special sensitivity
of birds to microwave radiation. Migratory birds navigate
the stars when skies are dear, but when the sky is dark or
overcast; they rely on their ability to sense the earths magnetic
field. It is thought that the towers may disorient or
confuse their navigation ability. Scientists are baffled by the
phenomenon. One thing is for sure, with hundreds of new
towers going up, millions more birds will die. Farmers have observed problems with their
animals in fields near towers. Cows are experiencing still births, spontaneous abortions,
birth deformities, behavior problems, and sudden declines in their general health. In some
cases, the entire
herd has regained their health immediately after relocation away from the tower.
There is a growing mobilization worldwide to educate
the public about the dangers of cell phones Switzerland is
attempting to get an initiative on the ballot titled, Moratorium on Mobile Telephone
Antennas If passed this law
would halt construction of any new towers. The deadline
for gathering signatures is Sept. 12, 2003.
Closer to home there is a safe haven from electromagnetic pollution and Citizens groups
have formed to help keep
it that way. Calling, themselves Neighbors Opposed to the
Tower (NOT and Wireless Free Mendocino, these activist
groups are fighting to keep the wireless age out of Mendocino County. Through education
campaigns and county forums, they have, so far been successful in keeping corporations
from building any towers.
We have had concerned customers ask us to make the
Market a cell phone-free zone as numerous other conscientious businesses in the Bay Area
have done. We are considering this now and would welcome any comments or questions
you might have. Please address them to Hope.
